As parents, you’ll notice that your child’s teeth change rapidly. One minute they’re flashing you that adorable gummy smile, and next thing you know, their mouth is full of adult teeth. Every stage of your child’s oral development brings with it new requirements, challenges, and opportunities to instill lifelong healthy habits.
Here at Alpenglow Dental in Salt Lake City, we’re happy to walk your family through every stage. From that first tooth to those magical braces-off photos, our experienced staff will ensure your kids learn to love dental care. It’s simple, friendly, and painless. In fact, here’s everything you need to know about caring for your child’s teeth from baby to teen.
Toddlers (Ages 1–3): Where It All Begins
Small teeth aren’t easier to care for—they require more attention. This is where your child’s oral health journey begins, so let’s make sure it’s a good start!
The First Dental Visit
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends your child see a dentist by their first birthday. Or if their first tooth comes in before that, within six months of their first tooth. I know, it seems early! However, these visits help your child become familiar with the office and dentist. Plus, it lets us catch any issues early on.
Consider it a wellness checkup. We count teeth, ensure gums are healthy, and offer you tips on how to care for your child at home.
Building Brushing Habits Early
Don’t wait until all those tiny teeth arrive to start brushing. As soon as your child gets their first tooth, you can start brushing those teeth and gums. Use a soft-bristled baby toothbrush with just a smear of fluoride toothpaste (about the size of a grain of rice). Have fun with it! Play a song that lasts two minutes, make funny faces in the mirror. Remember, twice a day.
Young Children (Ages 4–7): Growing Smiles, Growing Confidence
Your child will begin answering those endless “why” questions with their newfound vocabulary. You’ll also start to see an increase in confidence as they explore and learn. Encourage those good brushing habits to develop into lifelong techniques.
perfecting brushing techniques
Upgrade the toothpaste to a pea-sized amount. Children in this age group will likely still need your help brushing their teeth. Their little hands can’t quite reach every tooth (yet). Brush together in the mornings and evenings, then allow them to brush alone so they can gain confidence.
Remember to floss! As new teeth come in, they’ll begin to touch each other. Food and plaque can get stuck in those nooks and crannies.
preventing cavities

Regular Dental Check Ups Sandy, Utah
Did you know cavities are the most common chronic disease in children? The bright side is that they’re also preventable! Help your child avoid cavities by:
- Limiting sugary foods and drinks (ie. candy and juice)
- Encouraging water as their primary beverage
- Asking us about dental sealants to protect their back teeth from decay
- Continuing to schedule regular dental checkups every six months.
Remember, we make our checkups fun here at Alpenglow Dental. Your child will be excited to come back and see us.
Older Children (Ages 8–12): The Mixed-Teeth Years
Say goodbye to those baby teeth as your child starts losing them in preparation for permanent teeth. With these new teeth comes more independence with brushing and flossing.

Your child can likely brush and floss their teeth without assistance. Your role is encouragement and the occasional double-check. Post a chart in the bathroom to help them track their brushing twice a day.
Looking for Early Signs of Orthodontic Needs
We recommend having your child come in for an orthodontic evaluation at age seven. Why? The earlier we detect alignment problems, the sooner we can start taking action. During this evaluation, we’re looking for:
- Crowding or crooked teeth
- Malocclusions (misaligned bites, overbites, underbites)
- Early or late loss of baby teeth
- Use of habits such as thumb sucking that may alter tooth positioning
Use of habits such as thumb sucking that may alter tooth positioning
The earlier we can detect these signs, the less time and intervention they may need later on.
Kids Stay Active in Salt Lake City Too!
Protecting Active Kids
Between soccer practice, basketball games, biking, and camping, Utah families are always on the go. Sports accidents can happen whether you play competitively or for fun. If your child is active in sports, consider having your dentist provide a custom-made mouthguard. They’ll protect your child’s smile from unexpected collisions.
Teenagers (Ages 13-18): Building Healthy Habits For Life
Your teen will likely begin orthodontic work during this stage of life. They’re also juggling school, friends, jobs, and more. Encourage your teen to take pride in their smile by instilling good habits early.
Orthodontic Care in Full Swing
Many teens get braces or Invisalign to straighten their teeth. There are many benefits to orthodontic work. One you may not have thought of is that straight teeth are easier to clean! We will walk your teen through every option and how to care for their teeth while in treatment.
Addressing Common Teenage Hygiene Issues
Teenagers are busy. They think they have enough to worry about, but imagine if we told them dental hygiene was another thing they had to remember? Help them out by reminding them to:
- Brush twice a day and floss daily
- Keep a travel toothbrush with them for long days away from home.
- Cut back on sodas and energy drinks. These highly acidic drinks damage tooth enamel.
- Make sure they never skip their six month dental checkups.
Discussing Long Term Oral Health
Kids this age are also capable of understanding why good oral hygiene is important. Cavities aren’t the only thing we should worry about with teens. Help them understand how important it is to avoid smoking, vaping, and how these things can negatively affect their gums and teeth. We’re always here to help be that voice of reason if you need it.
