Bluffdale, UT

Jens and Rise Madsen were the first permanent settlers to arrive in the Bluffdale area.  In 1862 they built a home on the east side of the Jordan RIver. Another family, the Petersens joined them later that same year. A few families followed within the next few years.

Once the canals were constructed it brought many more families into the area. The system grew to where Bluffdale had seven canals.  The Salt Lake County canal system employed William Turner in 1874. He moved his family to Jordan Narrows and became the watchman at the dams.

The Salt Lake County Court created the Bluffdale Precinct on December 14th, 1883, with Loius Peterson as the constable and William Merrill as the Justice of the Peace. A Post Office followed 5 years later in the fall. The postmaster was also William Merrill. They petitioned the government for the name Bluffdale but were rejected. There was already a Post Office in the city of Bluff, Utah and they thought the names were too similar.

The citizens of the area were faced with an important decision in the 1970s. They had to choose whether to join with the city of Riverton or to become their own incorporated city. Bluffdale officially became its own city in October 1978.
